What is PREVENT?
Prevent is part of the UK’s counter terrorism strategy (CONTEST) which has four strands:
PURSUE – To pursue the terrorist and stop terrorist attacks
PROTECT – To strengthen our communities against a terrorist attack
PREPARE – To mitigate the impact of a terrorist attack
PREVENT – To prevent young people becoming involved in, or supporting terrorism
PREVENT aims to help practitioners identify and respond to early indications that an individual may be vulnerable to, or at risk of, radicalisation.
Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 (the Act) places a duty on certain bodies (listed in Schedule 6 of the Act) to have, in the exercise of their functions, “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”. This includes Highland Council, NHS Highland and Police Scotland.
Prevent is not designed to instruct people how to think and what to believe and it’s important that we allow young people to express their thoughts in order to develop our own understanding and challenge any myths or risk taking behaviour. However, where beliefs and ideologies lead to criminal intent or activity, a young person may be at risk of harm to themselves or from others.
Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP)
WRAP is an interactive facilitated workshop aimed at front line staff. It aims is to provide attendees with an awareness and understanding of the Prevent agenda and their role within it.
In particular, it aims to highlight:
- Definitions of PREVENT, radicalisation and terrorism
- Factors which could indicate a young person is more vulnerable to/at risk of radicalisation
- Behaviours which may indicate a young person is being groomed for radicalisation purposes
- Processes for responding to children, young people and families at risk
Training takes approximately 2 hours and is available free of charge to all practitioners working with children, young people and family members (including those based in adult services).
Bookings are closed for this event.
