DESCRIPTION:Delivered by James McTaggart\, Educational Psychologist\, Care
and Learning Service\, Highland Council\n\nThere is increasing awareness t
hat many children grow up in adverse circumstances\, and that this can hav
 e far-reaching impacts on health\, learning\, behaviour and well-being. So
metimes less clear is what we can do about this – whether for individual
s or to prevent adverse experiences.  There are many competing approaches
to the issues\, and many different metaphors – including “toxic stres
s”\, “attachment disorder”\, “resilience” and even “internal s
abre-toothed tigers”.\n\nThe effects of adverse childhood experiences of
ten present “in disguise”\, whether as substance misuse\, risk-taking\
 , behaviour issues\, withdrawal\, anxieties\, or issues with learning.\n\n
This session will provide an understanding of what counts as childhood adv
ersity from pre-birth to young adulthood\, and will show the impacts on br
ain\, mind and body so as to clarify how they can be recognised and what k
inds of intervention can help and when.\n\nThe session will be a mix of di
rect input and participation\, with time given for reflection and discussi
on.\n\nWhat can I expect from this training?\n\nBy the end of this trainin
g\, staff should:\n\n Know about the range of adverse experiences that ca
 n affect children’s well-being from pre-birth to teenage\n Understand h
ow adverse experiences affect development\, learning\, behaviour and healt
h\n Have clear ideas how\, in their role\, they can reduce or prevent the
impacts of adverse childhood experiences\n Understand the roles of other
staff\, agencies and services\, and how to work together using a common l
anguage\n Be confident in applying knowledge about adverse childhood expe
riences to joint planning for children\n Have a simple framework\, based
on SHANARI\, for communicating about ACEs safely and clearly to young peop
le and families\n\nWho should attend?\n\nAll staff who have regular contac
